The world of publishing.
The
relationship of the author and the publisher has been
antagonistic. This is partially because the subject of publishing is
not understood well by artists and partially because of short-sighted
think on the part of the publishers.
The publishing industry has operated to a degree as if publishing is a zero sum game.
To further explain that thought, the assumption that if 4 million
mystery books were sold in the last year then it is logical to print no
more than 4 million and a few thousand more.
We do not believe that it is a zero sum game. The potential of the
public to consume creativity is there and is possibly unlimited.
It is our belief that people will search out entertainment no matter
the state of the economy, no matter the state of politics or other
aspects that might seem to affect the overall financial well being of
publishers and authors alike.

Writers
can be quite shortsighted on their own part. Having just created a work
of art they do not necessarily look at the amount of work and expense
necessary to actually publish a book.
The subjects of design, graphic arts, illustration - all arts on their
own and the technology of printing presses, layout, proofreading,
editing, marketing, promotion and public relations as well as
distribution and sales all go unconsidered.
An author can feel on receipt of that rejection notice that his story was judged as unworthy.
This is not necessarily the case. If Stephen King writes something
there is a guarantee of a return. The publisher who might publish a
book by our example author will measure his uncertainty of making a
profit when weighed against the certain income of a Stephen King novel.
Which would be the better business decision? Certain income.
